What is THC-P?

When you start to examine the chemical complexity and potential of hemp, it is becoming more and more apparent how cannabinoids are changing the industry. Recently, a group of Italian researchers announced the discovery of two new cannabinoids — THC-P (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) and CBDP (cannabidiphorol). THC-P is a federally legal status as it’s protected by the 2018 Farm Bill which allows all hemp derivatives to be legal.

THC-P is an industry game-changer and interacts with the same CB1 receptor as THC. The crucial difference between THC-P and THC is the side alkyl chain, the string of carbon and hydrogen atoms attached to a molecule. To bind the CB1 receptor, a minimum of three carbons is necessary, while an eight-carbon sidechain registers the highest binding activity. Unlike cannabis THC that boasts five — THC-P boasts seven carbon rings in its alkyl side chain. And when applied to a makeshift receptor in a scientific study, the hemp-derived cannabinoid tended to bind the substance 30 times more reliably than cannabis THC.

Researchers also gave THC-P to lab mice and found that the animals behaved as if they were on THC, meaning their movement slowed, their temperature decreased and their reactions to painful stimuli diminished.

THCP: What is THC’s Binding Ability?

In the newly discovered unique THC-P molecule, researchers indicate that naturally occurring cannabinoids with more than five links in sidechain have not yet been detected in cannabis.

THC-P’s elongated side chain appears to have an even stronger affinity for the CB1 receptor than regular THC, which suggests it can work its magic more potently.

When the researchers checked the binding affinity of THC-P against human CB1 and CB2 receptors, they found that THC-P was over 30 times more active than regular THC on the CB1 receptor, and nearly 10 times more active than cannabis THC on the CB2 receptor.

Will THC-P Remain a Popular Cannabinoid?

According to recent studies — THC-P even at lower doses has more cannabimimetic activity than THC. Dr. Cecilia J. Hillard of the Medical College of Wisconsin stated, “The latest study has two important gaps, in my opinion. First, they should have compared the in vivo effects of THC-P to that of THC ‘head-to-head’ so that relative potencies could be assessed.”

Dr. Samuel Banister of The University of Sydney stated, “While this possibility cannot be ruled out, the known potency differences for THC and THC-P at cannabinoid receptors is relatively small, while the difference in abundance of each in cannabis is enormous. The same is true of CBD and CBDP, although CBD requires even higher doses to achieve many of its pharmacological effects. For this reason, I do not feel that minor or trace phytocannabinoids like THC-P or CBDP contribute significantly to the psychoactive effects of different cannabis strains.”
