What is Glioblastoma Brain Cancer?
Brain cancer is a malignant growth of abnormal brain cells in the brain. The grouping of abnormal cells is called tumors. There are more than 100 forms of brain tumors, according to the National Brain Tumor Society.
Glioblastoma (also called GBM) is a fast-growing, very aggressive cancer that grows into surrounding brain tissue. Signs and symptoms of GBM include headaches, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness — and may develop when the tumor begins to put excess pressure on the brain.
Neurological symptoms can also present themselves which are dependent on the tumor location, including weakness or sensory changes of face, arm or leg, balance difficulties and neurocognitive issues, and seizures.
There is currently no cure and despite treatment, many affected people live less than a year after the initial diagnosis. The distinctive neurological effects of CBD are critical to the growing popularity of brain cancer research.
CBD and Brain Cancer
Recently, Colorado State University researchers found that CBD caused cell death in glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer.
Chase Gross, a student at Colorado State University, recently stated, “Our work (the study of brain cancer cells) shows that CBD has the potential to provide an effective, synergistic glioblastoma therapy option and that it should continue to be vigorously studied.”
Published in The FASEB Journal, the researchers studied glioblastoma. Tests were devoted to the effects of CBD isolate, containing 100 percent CBD, and CBD extract, containing small amounts of other naturally occurring compounds such as THC.
The findings? Gross stated, “Our experiments showed that CBD slows cancer cell growth.”
Therapeutic Effects of CBD and the Brain
CBD has many therapeutic properties that can assist individuals facing both physical and psychological issues.
Stress and Anxiety
Epilepsy is a progressive neurological disease characterized by recurrent seizures. Since CBD has antiseizure properties, it is a well‐tolerated and effective antiseizure agent. Epidiolex (CBD) was approved by the FDA in 2018 for the treatment of seizures in the catastrophic pediatric encephalopathies Dravet syndrome and Lennox‐Gastaut syndrome.
Since CBD can help reduce stress and anxiety, this, in turn, can also be a sleep aid. Some CBD products also contain melatonin to aid in sleep quality.
